What Is Trout Like?

Trout - Bearcaster

Trout, which belongs to the genera Salvelinus, Oncorhynchus, and Salmo, is one of the common freshwater fish pieces. A couple of the non-salmonid fish, Cynoscion nebulosus or the spotted seatrout for example, also use the word trout as a section of the name.

Living in the different environments, the color of trout will also be different. An interesting point is the change of the colors and patterns when they move to another environment. Trout living in the sea often looks silvery while trout growing in a small river will have the vivid color.

Trout do not have spines. Along with their back, there is a small adipose fin. The lifespan of trout is not short. Some in North American can live up to 7 years and grow over 30kg ~ 66lb.

What Does Trout Taste Like?

Trout Taste Like

Initially, you should know that your location will decide the different kinds of trout. The most common must mention rainbow trout. Aside from that, you can also find brooks, steelhead, or browns.

Many people assume that meat of trout is similar to salmon. Yes, this one is not wrong. Basically, both are pink meats. Even, the flavor is also the same. Some others think that the flavor of the river or saltwater trout is similar to salmon while the freshwater is close to the flavor of catfish.

All in all, what makes it different? It can say that the difference of taste is owing to the various conditions. In particular, saltwater contributes to triggering amino acids (glycine – sweet acid) produced to offer plenty of flavors. The freshwater kind does not include this substance. Correspondingly, they have a little mild.

On the other hand, the flavor is also affected by the amount of fat. If fish move more, the structure will change. From there, it provides a lot of oxygen pigments, so the flavor increases significantly. Therefore, the farm fish do not provide more flavors.

This one shows that the rivers are the ideal location to get the perfect flavor of trout. The trout from the lake is often tasteless while the wild kind is flavorful and robust. That’s why many people choose to hunt trout, instead, the farmed kind.

In case you want to get the best flavor of trout after cooking, you likely combine with the lemon and oil mixture. The cooking method considered as the most effective to get the perfect taste of trout is to fry or grill. Inevitably, if you apply others, it will be difficult to keep their natural taste.

An Ultimate Answer For “ How To Launch A Boat By Yourself ? ”

Taking the boat out for a ride, either for fishing purposes or recreation is an activity usually done in pairs or in groups. Apart from getting the job done in an easier and more efficient manner, it also allows for a perfect way to establish close bonds with people whom you share common interests with. Moreover, a lot of people find it rather scary and risky to go out on the sea without people who would serve as their “buddy”. While this is the belief that’s commonly held among boat owners and/or fishing enthusiasts alike, the reality is there are some moments where you simply can’t find company, yet either want or feel the need to go out and explore the seas on your own. Should this end up being the case, you would have to learn how to launch a boat by yourself.

Unbeknownst to a lot of people, this could be done fully on your own. Besides trying your hardest to conquer the fear that comes with trying to do so, there are also a lot of things you have to keep in mind, but is something that’s easy for you to learn and with constant practice, get used to.

Things You Need

4×4 Vehicle

how to launch a boat by yourself

While any vehicle may suffice, it would be optimal for you to make use of the 4×4 type. The reason for this is that sometimes, the surface close to the ramp is one who could get slippery, which is obvious given that the place would be susceptible to moisture and growth of moss. Also, the area surrounding the river or the lake would almost always be muddy, and in the case of beaches, sandy.

Cars that are not of the 4×4 type is extremely difficult to maneuver in cases like this, as they could get lodged or stuck on these surfaces. The 4×4 vehicle, on the other hand, would allow you to smoothly take control of your vehicle despite the conditions not being that favorable.

Clear Driver’s Side Mirror

Clear Driver’s Side Mirror

This is the mirror you have to be most comfortable with when out of all the mirrors of your vehicle whenever you get to launch the boat on your own. The reason for this is because this is the mirror that would allow you to view the launcher while it goes down the water. Moreover, this is where you’d be checking on whether or not your vehicle is going too near, or further into the dock.

orange webbing

Instead of making use of ropes and learning how to tie them the foolproof means, as well as worrying about what kind of knot to use so that it remains tight but is still easy to untie, it’s best for you to invest in webbings that you could purchase in a lot of outdoor stores. What distinguishes them from webbings is the fact that they are flat strips, made of different varieties of fiber, with modern varieties usually being made of polyester, nylon, or polypropylene.

tied webbing

The webbings made of these materials are light and strong at the same time, with breaking strengths usually of 10,000 lb. This weight is far greater that any of the yachts or boats that are owned personally. For use in launching a boat on your own, a webbing or about 1 m long would suffice. Moreover, it’s important to note that both ends of the webbing need to have solid loops that don’t get loose or untied with heavy weights.

These carabiners serve as ties to ropes. In other words, dealing with carabiners is a process that would be a lot less cumbersome than having to tie knots on the dock and around the designated part of the boat. These are those small, metallic, and specialized shackles with a loop and a gate that is spring-loaded.

varieties of carabiners

There are non-locking and locking varieties of carabiners, but for use in boat launching, the non-locking type, which could be released with a gentle inward push of the lock would pretty much suffice, although you can use carabiners of any shape or size as well. It’s also important to note that these carabiners need not be heavy, as these can be made of different kinds of lightweight metals. For use in boat launching, you would need 2 of these.

How To Launch A Boat By Yourself

Check The Condition Of The Boat

how to launch a boat by yourself

This is the single step you should never choose to skip. The reason for this is because it would spare you from potential troubles in the middle of the ocean. Furthermore, this is something that you have to do, given that there would be nobody else to help you out. The conditions you have to check are your boat’s motor’s life, the level of gasoline, as well as other oddities and suspicious cracks or marks. Should there be something wrong, make it a point to have it fixed before venturing out into the body of water.

Clear The Area Surrounding The Dock

Clear The Area Surrounding The Dock

Whenever you decide to launch a boat on your own, make it a point that all of the possible nuisances and hazards would be removed from the vicinity of the place. These include kids and pets that may be frolicking around, stray stones, among others. This would spare both them and you from dangers of getting run over or getting caught in an accident.

Attach Or Plug In The Drain Plug

how to launch a boat by yourself

This is one step you would not want to forget, lest your boat would sink the moment the launcher gets in contact with the water and would be too heavy actually to remove. Furthermore, water getting into certain parts of the boat, specifically the engine would most definitely end up causing damage.

Undo The Necessary Straps

how to launch a boat by yourself

Once all of the above steps have been done, before driving closer to the boat, you have to undo the straps that hold the boat to the launcher. This allows the boat to glide and float into the water once the launcher has already gone further into the dock.

Switch Car Gear To Reverse, and Further Into The Dock

Switch Car Gear To Reverse

Always make it a point to drive slowly. Only stop once the boat already starts floating off the launcher. To make future steps easier, make it a point for you to do this on the side, or as close to the dock as possible. Never drive it farther, or if your dock is wide, a point too far from any of the two sides.

Turn Your Vehicle Off, Then Lift The Brake

how to launch a boat by yourself

Always make sure that the brake gets lifted before you turn your vehicle off, lest your it would most definitely come sliding down the ramp and into the water as well, given that it is an inclined plane and your vehicle is the 4×4 type.

Affix The Boat To The Side Of The Dock

Affix The Boat To The Side Of The Dock

Once the boat starts slipping away from the launcher, grab it as quickly as you could and affix the carabiner and webbing to its side. Once you have successfully done so, pull the webbing until it touches the side of the dock. Most of the time, docks are equipped with slots especially made for tying ropes and the like, and this is where you ought to affix your carabiner. Given that most personal boats are light, a little bit of dragging is all it takes. The carabiner and the webbing make all of this a process which is much easier to do than it would with traditional ropes.

Start Your Boat Up and Enjoy!

how to launch a boat by yourself

Once you have reached this point, all that’s left for you to do is to simply hop into the boat and start its motor. From here, you could then easily maneuver the boat for you to go and navigate your way into whatever body of water it may be. Always keep the basic protocols in mind once you’re out on the waters.

Moreover, keep a communication device handy with you to call anyone on land should something go wrong. Also, make sure not to make your trips last as long. Keep them as brief as possible, and be as careful as you possibly could, given that you’re all alone.

You can watch this video to see how to launch a boat by yourself. Very easy!

With the necessary materials and equipment, launching the boat on your own need not be a difficult job to do at all. Despite that, however, there are several risks that are associated with traveling all on your own, and with no one else to look after you, you have to be as careful as you possibly could. Moreover, it is important that trips of this nature should be kept as brief as possible. The condition of the boat should also be optimal for the whole trip to be safe and for possible risks to be kept at a minimum. Lastly, with patience, as well as constant practice, launching a boat on your own could pretty much come across as second nature to you.

How To Adjust Idle On Johnson Outboard

History Of Outboard Motors

Back in the day, the only means through which people travel across lakes, oceans, and other bodies of water used to be with the help of sails or oars. These sails would usually be made of thick cloths and various animal hide that are deemed strong enough to resist the strong winds.

While these were effective on their own, chances are, their voyage would solely depend on wind speed, and hence traveling from one point to another through the ocean would take a relatively huge amount of time.

When it comes to motors for sea transportation, the Outboard Boat Motor is the most common, given that it is a variety of motors that are specialized for use at sea. Apart from that, it’s popular because of its minimal maintenance.

how to adjust idle on johnson outboard

Regarding its operations, the idle phase is one of the most critical, and therefore something that needs proper adjustments to ensure smooth operations and longevity of the outboard motor. Having said that, this article would help to teach you how to adjust idle on Johnson outboard.

What Are Outboard Motors?

how to adjust idle on johnson outboard

Outboard Motors are a system employed as a means of propelling boats. This particular type of motor, specifically the Johnson Outboard, is popular for use in small boats that are used on a regular basis, especially the kind used for fishing.

They are also capable of providing control for steering, and its direction could be pivoted directly above its mounting, as well as allowing for thrust control. It is commonly installed on the transom, or the back end of any boat, and works by “pushing” the boat further away across the sea with the help of the rapid turning of the propellers.

Advantages Of Outboard Motors

how to adjust idle on johnson outboard

The reason for this is that their maintenance is the one which is minimal. It’s usually fixed and bolted onto the stern of the boat and is also a single machine which makes its installation a relatively easy process. While it has been perceived to be a thing of the past, with stern-drive engines becoming the more modern and popular alternative, stricter regulations imposed by regulatory boards have enticed bowriders to resort to them, with a resurgence in its popularity, given that its restrictions on use are significantly more lenient.

The Role Of The Carburetor Outboard Motors

how to adjust idle on johnson outboard

When it comes to adjusting the idle state on Johnson Outboard motors, the part involved would most definitely have to be the Carburetor. As with any other engine, this is the part which serves as the combustion powerhouse of every engine and works by blending air and fuel by employing the Bernoulli’s Principle. This is basically what powers up your outboard motor and therefore, has to be cleaned on a regular basis for proper combustion to ensue.

With several months to a few years of regular use, these carburetors tend to be grimy and dirty, which could, in turn, be the cause of malfunctioning as well as noisy and ineffective operations. Having said that, there are several carburetor cleaning products available in the market nowadays. These cleaning products usually come in canisters, which allow you to spray air fast enough to remove all the dirt and grime that may have been accumulated. Should it be too grimy, however, one could make use of brushes to get rid of the dirt, but water should never be used.

Why Adjust The Carburetor?

how to adjust idle on johnson outboard

Apart from the obvious reason that the Carburetor has to be adjusted for optimal functionality of the boat, as well as to prevent future problems when it comes to navigation. The adjustments are usually and ideally performed once the engine is in “idle mode“, which is characterized by having the engine being operational despite the device not running. This particular mode is one which is available on both car engines and Johnson outboard motors.

Apart from allowing your boat to navigate more smoothly, it also allows for more fuel efficiency, given that once your idle mode has been adjusted to the point of being enabled, you would not have to worry about your engine dying all of a sudden in the middle of the sea, and having to restart the whole engine, the initial thrusting of which would cost you so much fuel to do than transition to movement from idle mode.

Materials Needed for Idle Adjustment

The adjustment process is not difficult in its entirety. While maintenance would entail cleaning up with the use of specialized cleaning products when it comes to adjustment on idle mode, one would only need the following devices:

There are several kinds of screwdrivers out in the market nowadays. It is one of the most common and most basic tools that are part of just about every single toolbox. For use in adjusting idle Johnson outboard motors, it’s best to choose one which is neither too big nor too small; the former could get in the way and scratch or damage nearby parts, while too small of a screwdriver would most definitely result in a poor or difficult adjustment.

In choosing screwdrivers, it’s also best for one to make use of the magnetic type, to lessen the burden associated with falling screws, and it’s also perfectly ideal for anyone to make use of those screwdrivers with rubberized and firm handles. Having a rubber grip would allow you to have much better control of the screw, given that these parts might be poorly oiled and therefore, difficult to turn around.

A tachometer is a device that allows you to check the rate of each engine, specifically in RPM or revolutions per minute. The ideal speed or RPM rating varies from motor to motor, and the Tachometer is the only way for you to do so. While some people tend to simply listen to their motor and turn the screw until the “right” sound is heard, it’s always best to double-check or verify. Connect this to the vacuum gauge which can be found on the Tachometer.

Procedure For Idle Adjustment

1. Turn The Engine On

how to adjust idle on johnson outboard

This is the first, most obvious step for you to adjust the idle of your outboard motor. The mechanism through which devices could be turned on would depend on whether you employ a yanking mechanism to start the engine up, or whether you use the keys, the latter being the more common mechanism. Make sure that it’s set to neutral, or in such a way that your propeller would not be moved. Make sure that the entire boat remains as stationary as possible.

2. Check If It Is Idling Properly

how to adjust idle on johnson outboard

The “correct” idling rate is the one which varies from engine to engine. Depending on your Johnson Outboard Engine, it would vary from unit to unit, and the ideal rates are often indicated in the manual. For these engines, it is ideally set at 600 to 850 RPM. If your motor falls either below or above the level indicated in the manual, then it’s most definitely best for you to adjust. Otherwise, maybe minimal cleaning or maintenance in other aspects would suffice.

3. Turn The Idle Screw

Turn The Idle Screw

To begin the idle adjustment, after you have turned your engine on, the next thing you have to turn the idle screw, one which is usually surrounded by a spring and found at the lower part of the Johnson Outboard Motor. Loosen it by turning the screw Counter ClockWise, which is one turn to 1 and one-fourth.

4. Keep On Turning And Listen To The Engine

Listen to The Engine

Once this has been accomplished, continue turning it counter clockwise, or loosening the screw, until the engine seems to be dying out. This is expected and is a result of having too much air and fuel in the mixture. After achieving this, the next thing you have to do is to turn the opposite side until the air becomes too much In the mix, and this is characterized by the backfiring and stuttering sounds, again, like it’s going to die out. From this point, you may then loosen it up again, from ¼ to as much as ½ of a single rotation of the screw.

There are many things you have to keep in mind when it comes to adjusting your idle modes. This is of utmost importance, given that this mode may determine the efficiency of your motor. If you want to be more fuel efficient, and if you want your motor to last much longer, then you might as well adjust it on idle on a systematic schedule.

Mullets: The Fish That Jumps For Joy

If you’re an individual who’s into fishing, one of the most important things you have to understand would definitely have to be the behavior of fishes. These behaviors include how fast they swim, at which depths they prefer staying, the kind of bait they are attracted to, among others. Also, they need to be wary of some unusual behaviors of certain species. Of all the most commonly captured species of fish, one which stands out regarding unusual behavior is mullets. In this article, we shall know a little bit more about this particular species, and ultimately answer the question: “Why do mullet jump?

Mullets: The Jumping Fish

What Are Mullets?

What are Mullets?

Mullets are a special species of fish that normally thrive in tropical, or coastal waters, and are some of the most abundant and commonly found fish throughout the world. Mullet is a collective term for fish that belong to the family Mugilidae, with a total of around 73 species. They are a common and extremely important source of food in the Mediterranean countries, as well as in other places where they thrive.

Characteristics Of Mullets

Characteristics of Mullets

These fishes are easily distinguished through being medium-sized, as well as the presence of a separate pair of dorsal fins rather than fused. Their scales are usually silver in color, and they have noticeably thick lips and mouths which are triangular in shape. Apart from this, they also have stomachs which are unusually muscular in nature, as well as a slightly different pharyngeal structure, being comprised of more muscles than that of other varieties.

These Mullets feed on detritus and algae and are an important variety.

Regarding other characteristics apart from physical, these fish tend to swim around in various depths, but for most of the time, tend to settle in the deeper parts. Apart from that, they are also known for occasionally swimming to the surface and jumping out of the water. Having said that, this unique behavior among this species of fish has been subject to various arguments and theories with hopes of actually being able to explain why this happens.

Types Of Jumps

Types of Mullet Jumps

In studies and general observations, there have been two different kinds of jumps that were observed among these fish. The first kind is a straight slice across the body of water, and the second one is when it lands on its side. Regardless of kind, these mullets usually reach a height of 3 feet above the surface whenever they do so.

Why Do They Jump?

1. Emotions

Why do mullet Jump

One of the theories when it comes to why these mullets jump is simply because they are happy and feel like it. Unbeknownst to a lot of people, these fish are also capable of feeling an array of emotions, and different species also carry different “personalities“, with mullets being distinct by showing emotions through getting out of the water and “jumping for joy.

2. To Rid Their Body Of Parasites

The sea can be home to various flora and fauna, each of which need each other to exist. Like various land animals, there are parasites that live in the sea as well, and these tend to cling on fish and feed on its blood to survive. As with land parasites, these could be irritating and itchy for the mullet and therefore thrust themselves in the air with the landing strong enough to shake off the microscopic parasites.

3. Lack Of Oxygen

Mullet Lack of Oxygen

While the latter are not scientifically founded, this theory came from actual research, which has found that these fish tend to jump more in areas where the levels of dissolved oxygen are significantly less, given that fish of this particular genus rely on dissolved oxygen just so that they can survive. The open air abounds or has higher levels of dissolved oxygen than in the water, and this is why it could be said, and these jumps could, therefore, be equated into brief gasps for air.

4. To Escape Predators

While mullets tend to feed on algae and detritus, they also tend to regularly try and escape from their predators, which often are the larger fish. This is a mechanism which is unique among mullets, as before they jump out of the water, they get to swim fast, and jumping out into the water could ultimately provide an effective means for their predators to lose track of them, or simply get lost in their sight.

5. Break Their Eggs Open

Mullet Eggs Open

This is another theory, given that the force of landing on the water from a relatively high jump would often result in the egg cracking, allowing them to be bred and fertilized more easily that it would had it been left uncracked.

The Jumping Mechanism: How Do They Jump?

The mechanism, or the way in which this fish jump is rather simple, as all they have to do is to swim as fast as they could until they reach the surface. They then either land on their side or upright. The reason for the variations as to how they land, however, remains an area of fascination among biologists and marine enthusiast alike to this day.

Significance in the Fishing Industry

Given that mullets are a delicious type of fish, they are, therefore, some of the most commonly captured fish. Their leaping characteristics are important simply because this would help fishermen to easily detect their presence in the bodies of water.

Different fishes, as they say, have different characteristics. While several fishes share a lot of common characteristics, when it comes to unique ones, the Mullet simply stands out given that not all fish are capable of thrusting themselves as high as three feet from the surface of the body of water. The exact reasonwhy they do so remain a mystery to this day, given that the behavior of fishes is the one which is rather difficult to investigate owing to the difficult conditions for the testing and studying of marine animals.

Complete Guide for How to Catch Tilapia

Tilapia is a type of fish mainly found in fresh and brackish water. This type of fish is becoming an increasingly popular culinary feature in many hotels and restaurants. Tilapias are known for their white and delicious flesh. They are known to be natives of Africa and the Middle East but have been introduced into several places outside their natural habitat including a number of states in the U.S with warm waters. Tilapias are classified as herbivores. It can be quite difficult to learn how to catch tilapia because they are rather shy. Catching them will require your best angling skills.

5 Things You Must Know Before Fishing

Spawning Season

Spawning Season

There are two main reasons why tilapia may be attracted to bait: hunger and to protect their territory. Using live is one of the most effective ways to catch tilapia. Tilapias are very territorial during their fry-rearing season and spawning. During this time, Tilapia become aggressive to virtually anything that comes closer to their spawning beds.

Tilapias normally spawn for unlimited periods. They can spawn until water temperatures decrease below 60 degrees. This will give you ample time to draw lures near their spawning beds. Chances of catching Tilapia with a reel and a line drop abruptly after the spawning period.

Likely Locations

Likely Locations

Most Tilapias prefer spawning in shallow waters with a lot of vegetation to offer cover from other fish and predators. It is very easy to locate the tilapia spawning beds. The beds look like craters swathing in the river bottoms or ponds. Tilapias are very nervous, therefore avoid getting too close to their beds.

Effective Bait

Effective Bait

Tilapias mainly feed on plant foods like corn and peas. They can also be lured by bread balls because they are some of the best and most effective baits for starving Tilapia. Use man-made lures that look like small fish or invertebrates if you want to take advantage of their territorial instincts.

Remember to use short lures because tilapia normally bite fish mimicking lures. Short lures will likely make a strong hook set. Many anglers use small pieces of earthworms on very small hooks to catch tilapia.

Tiny Tackle

Tiny Tackle

It is important to consider using light tackle because Tilapia is a relatively small fish. Arm yourself with a 6 or 7-foot long, lightweight spinning cast with a rotating reel. Tie your reel with 4 to 8 pound test monofilament line and number 4 hooks.

Keep What You Catch

Keep What You Catch

Although some people prefer using catch-and-release methods for most game fish like trout and bass, anglers are encouraged to keep and cook all the tilapias they can catch. Tilapia can be territorial. In addition, they can easily colonize their habitats. Tilapias are known to eliminate other fish in their habitats causing imbalances in the ecosystems of their habitats.

This species of fish destroys the vegetation composition of rivers and ponds that they live in. This is one of the main reasons why anglers are encouraged to keep the tilapia fish that they catch to keep their populations in rivers, ponds, and lakes in check. Nevertheless, catching tilapia is not easy and requires a very light tackle because tilapia is very wary and has good eyesight.

Old Bread

Old breadStep #1tilapia in slow-moving and shallow water

Look for tilapia in slow-moving and shallow water in sub-tropical and southern regions. Other good strategies include fishing from the banks and slow trolling in a boat along the beach shores.

Step #2tilapia using earthworms and night crawlers

Attract tilapia using earthworms and night crawlers. This can be done by attaching a live worm to its collar. Shove the barb through the other side and leave the hook uncovered.

Step #3bobber float

Do not go deep into the water. Cast near the shores where there are a good number of sea structures including dead shrubbery, rock formations, and immersed branches. Mark your position using a bobber float. Move on to another area if one spot does not result in a catch after several casts.

Step #4bait

Use different baits or design your super bait by yourself. Make bread balls using old and wet bread with a substantial amount of cheese spread from the can. The cheese spread will give the bread balls some taste and allow them to last longer on the hook.

Step #5spoon-like lip and jigs

Ensure that the bread balls are the size of a large grape and put one onto a hook. The barb should be buried inside the bread balls. You can freeze the bread balls overnight before you go fishing for added durability.

Your hooks will still pass through the bait easily and hold up well in the water.

Step #6

Use artificial lures to attract tilapia. Avoid deep-diving crank bait with a metal, spoon-like lip and jigs because they are not safe during hot summer months.

Step #7Gently cast the line for the fish to strike

Gently cast the line for the fish to strike.

How To Catch Tilapia

Below is the standard operating procedure (SOP) for Tilapia fishing:

Bait Preparation

Fish pellets are some of the most effective baits for Tilapia. It is important to prepare your baits at home or at least one hour before fishing. Do not soak your pellets for long. In addition, avoid adding lots of water in your pellets.

Allow the pellets to soak for 5 to 10 minutes. Flooding your bag of pellets will make them expand too rapidly, turning them into a soggy heap of glop. Pour some hot water into the bag of pellets and shake it gently to wet all the pellets.

Bait Preparation

Pour the water away after a minute. Allow the pellets to expand for about 30 minutes. The main aim is to allow the moisture to get into the center of the pellet so that it becomes spongy and soft. Pour your pellets in some ground bait powder, also known as dedak and mix it well. This will add some flavoring to your bait.

Rig Preparation

Light Tackle Float Fishing

Light Tackle Float Fishing

Using an umbrella rig is one of the most effective ways to fish tilapia. The umbrella rig has to be prepared at home or purchased at tackle shops. However, I prefer to make my own rigs at home because it gives me the added satisfaction of catching fish with my own home made rig.

You can also use other less complicated rigs with single hooks and floats although you will have to use small floats, very thin lines, and tackles. Ensure that you use Ultra light tackles, 1000 size reels, 8 to 12lb mainline, 6ft rods, and a transparent mono.

Burley The Waters

Burley The Waters

Take the soaked pellets and throw a handful into open waters at least 5 meters from the shores and banks. Wait for tilapia to appear, but if they do not show up or feed within five minutes, throw another handful of pellets.

Do not use excessive amounts of burley to avoid wasting your baits. This is the point where you have to practice a lot of patience. Cast your bait out near or at the center once the feeding frenzy begins. The closer you are to the frenzy the better for your fishing.

Take The Bait!

Tilapia will be eating the floating pellets one at a time. It will only be a matter of time before they get to your bait. You have to strike after a second or two once the float dives. Some tilapia will even hook themselves without setting it. You may have to use some force to reel in your catch once the fish is hooked up.

When Is The Best Time To Catch Tilapia?

Mornings when the sun is rising and evenings as the sun sets are the best time to fish for tilapia. You can also be lucky during the day. It is quite hard to catch tilapia at night. The best time to catch tilapia is during their spawning season, which is anytime when the water temperature is above 68 degrees.

When is The Best Time To Catch Tilapia

Spawn time is characterized by perfectly circular and deep, dish-sized holes on the shores and banks. Male tilapia make holes and then find female tilapia to bring them back to the hole where courtship commences.

During this time, male tilapia become very harsh and aggressive. The female tilapia usually carry their eggs in their mouths so they are neither near nor in their spawning beds. The male tilapia will still protect the spawning beds even when there are no eggs around.

You can catch tilapia during this time using small crankbait lures and small crappie jigs. Tilapia mostly feed on plankton and small living creatures. Green algae and other plants are some of the best tilapia foods.

Insider Secrets on How to Catch Sand Fleas

Insider Secrets on How to Catch Sand FleasWhat is Sand Fleas?Sand Flea HabitatThe “LIP”How to Store Sand FleasTips on Catching Sand Fleas for Bait

What Is Sand Fleas?

Normally, sand fleas are not big in size. Most of them measure a half inch up to an inch long. The males grow up to 2 inches long while the females only grow up to ¾ inches long. Sand fleas, also known as mole crabs, have five sets of limbs under their stomach that they use to propel themselves under water. The mole crabs also use their ‘limbs’ to make holes on soft sand. Due to their elusive nature, there are no standards guides on how to catch sand fleas.

These creatures are known to be some of the few creatures that can travel backwards and forwards. The Sand fleas will not move when put in dry sand but can walk on wet sand as they find their way back to the water. Although most crabs have claws, the sand flea does not. Like fish, these crabs have gills that they use for breathing. They must live in oxygenated water to survive.

Sand Fleas

However, mole crabs can survive out of the water for a couple of hours, even days. Their survival out of the water will greatly depend on the temperature of the environment they are in and whether or not their gills dry off. Mole crabs have crab’s Telson on their underbellies. The telson, also known as the ‘digger serves various functions including:

  • It protects the mole crab’s underbelly, which is very soft.
  • It is used for burrowing into sand, which is a common activity for sand fleas.
  • The telson secures the sand flea after digging.

Pregnant mole crabs have hundreds of brightly colored eggs underneath their telsons. In a single reproductive season, which runs from February to October, one female mole crab can lay one clutch of 50-45,000 eggs per month. The eggs take around 30 days to develop. The eggs will change color to brown before they hatch.

Sand Flea Habitat

Studies indicate that sand flea eggs usually hatch after sunset and when the tide is high. The young mole crabs drift in the seas for about 3 to 6 months and go through a number of development stages while at sea. The larvae are washed up unto different beaches around March when they are in their juvenile stage.

At this stage, the sand fleas measure around ¼ inches long and are labeled recruits’ by biologists. The recruits join the older sand fleas in the sand near the shores, where the older sand fleas have been spending the winter with their heads buried deep.

Sand Flea Habitat

Mole crabs are normally found on beaches. The mole crab, also known as sand flea is not really a flea and cannot hurt you in any way. Sand fleas do not have claws and cannot bite. The mole crab is also referred to as a Sand Fiddler, Sand Grab, Sand Bugs, or Beach flea in some parts of America. A sand flea is a type of crab that lives in beach shores and wet sands.

Sand Flea Habitat

Mole crabs exist in more than 10 different species. These species are found on beaches all over the world. These crabs normally form colonies in the ‘swash zone’ of beaches in late March or Early April. The sand fleas usually remain slightly buried under the wet sand as the waves race up and down the beach.

If you want to catch a sand flea, stand at the shore and look down the beach to spot where water is running off the beach. When you see the tell tale Vs in the sand, run to the dry sand over them and wait for another wave.

Take a scoop through the colony as the waves go out. You can also use a sand flea rake to get the mole crabs. The sand flea rake is simply a shatterproof wire basket fixed to the end of a handle.

Sand Flea Habitat

If you want to hook a mole crab, slip the point up from the bottom end and out through the upper side of the shell. You can keep a sand flea for a few days. Ensure that they are kept damp and cool to stay alive. Store them in a container with some damp sand if you are at the beach. Put the sun out by placing a wet piece of cloth or towel over the container. Use fresh seawater to rinse the sand after every hour.

You can get the sand fleas home safely by carrying them in a container, in between some damp newspapers. At home, store them in the refrigerator or in a cooler box with enough ice. It is important to note that you will have to rinse the newspaper daily. Freeze them after a few days.

There are two ways you can use to freeze the sand fleas:

  • Leave them to scald in boiling water for about 10 seconds then put them in a freezer bag.
  • Alternatively, you can put the sand fleas in a freezer bag with a combination of baking powder and salt in equal measures. Then store the bag in the freezer.

Catching sand fleas is a bit challenging. Note that the mole crabs will not always be in the colonies. Sand fleas usually move a lot in the waves. They are often carried by the current and dispersed in various beaches.

At times, sand fleas move out of their colonies into scattered patches of sand fleas. This means that you have to go wading through them. Look for the mole crabs in soft and waterlogged sand.

Sand Flea Habitat

The “LIP”

The mole crabs are also found in the ‘Lip’. Lip is the area where waves stop moving down the beach. The lip stays under water all the time. Do not forget to look up and down the beach because sand fleas tend to migrate constantly. Most of them move up the shores when the tide comes while others move towards the sea as the tides fade away.

One scoop can get you 4 to 5 smaller sand fleas dangling on a bigger one. These are often smaller males attracted to a bigger female.

How To Store Sand Fleas

It is important to store sand fleas under the right conditions after catching them to eliminate the risk of death. Sand fleas are popular fishing baits for pompano, redfish, and sheepshead. However, they are quite delicate and require proper care and storage of you intend to use them as bait on your next pompano fishing expedition. Keeping these little creatures alive for fishing or presentation requires a thoughtful approach.

Fill a plastic container halfway with coquina consisting of tiny shells and shell fragments. Place the sand fleas you have caught on top of the coquina so that they can burrow in as they do on sand. The main function of the coquina is to absorb wastes from the sand fleas. Coquina is loosely compacted unlike beach sand, which is much denser and can kill the little crabs if it mixes with their wastes.

Although coquina helps to absorb wastes from the sand fleas, it is important to pat it with paper towel to minimize moisture. If you intend to use the coquina for multiple fishing trips, remove the sand fleas and dry the coquina by placing it in the microwave for about twenty minutes. Allow the coquina to cool before putting in the sand fleas.

Shells on the beach

If you are unable to find actual coquina, scrape up enough from the beach and mix it up with sand. This mixture has the same absorbent properties as coquina.

Tips On Catching Sand Fleas For Bait

market on the beach

Sand fleas are found in various beaches all around the world. These creatures look like crabs and are often used as bait for catching various fish species. Although you can buy live or frozen sand fleas for your angling trips, it is as easy to catch your own sand fleas on the beach and use them as bait. Contrary to the common misconception, sand fleas do not have claws and will not bite.

The most common food for sand fleas are planktons and organic matter on the beaches. You can easily find sand fleas in the intertidal zone. Follow these tips to catch sand fleas for bait.

morning beach

Being sensitive creatures, sand fleas often remain buried deep in the sand, especially when they feel threatened or when they sense the foot pressure of human beings or other animals. Therefore, the best time to catch sand fleas is early in the morning when there are few people walking on the beaches.

I often use the sand flea rake to catch mole crabs. This rake has a simple design and is quite effective in collecting the creatures from underground. However, I have also successfully caught sand fleas simply by scooping the sand at the right time and place.

Walk along the beach and look for signs of sand fleas including dark sand particles or clusters on top of the normal beach sand. This type of sand is usually excavated by the sand fleas as they burrow and is the one that forms the boundary between the top beach sand and the sand underneath. In addition, be on the lookout for sand flea antennas protruding from the ground. Consider carrying a cooler, especially if you intend to collect a significant number of sand fleas.

How to Catch Cobia 101: Expert Tips and Advice

Cobia is known by many names including cabio and lemon fish. However, many people refer to cobia as crab eaters because crabs are some of their favorite dishes. If you would like to know how to catch cobia, then you should probably learn how to use crabs as bait. Cobia bodies are long, slender, and have an unusually shaped snout.

They also have a depressed head with a protruding bottom jaw. They have a dark brown coloring that gradually fades to white towards their underbelly. In addition, the fish have distinct dark strips running the entire length of their bodies from the head to the tail. The dorsal fins of this fish are offset by smaller fins.

What Is Cobia?

What is Cobia

One of the most distinct features about cobia is that they often hold their pectoral fins horizontally. This gives it the look of a shark, especially when viewed from an aerial perspective. It is a fast growing fish species that can reach lengths of up to 33 inches or more within two years.

I have reeled in cobia weighing 80lbs on several occasions. I have also reeled in a 100 pounder on a few occasions. The heavier cobias that I have managed to catch are usually females.

Cobias prefer staying in warm waters. Therefore, they often migrate in search of suitable warm waters to spawn, which often occurs during the early summer months.

Some cobia species live permanently in the warm, deep waters of the Florida Keys and the Gulf of Mexico. The most suitable time to go for cobia fishing is during late fall and mid spring. During this time, migratory cobia usually returns to deep waters to feed around reefs and wrecks.

Cobias can often be found feeding around buoys, sea walls, and bridges among other places. They are popular fish in harbors, inlets, channels, and bays. It is important to know that cobia thrive in a protected environment.

The daily limit is one cobia per person. However, you can use diverse fishing techniques including spear fishing to catch cobia.

fresh cobia fish market

Many anglers enjoy fishing cobia because they are not easy to work out and catch. They are very unpredictable and can appear in a school, alone, in the shallows, and in deep waters. However, they can also be easy to find, especially when they are shadowing manta rays or sharks. Cobias look like small sharks and are often mistaken for the big fish.

Preparation For Fishing Cobia

1. Rigs And Techniques

Rigs and Techniques

Encountering a cobia is one thing, but tempting it is another thing altogether. Some of the most effective baits for fishing for cobia include squid, fish strips, and mulies. You can add some weights to these baits or not use weight at all. Cobias also respond relatively well to lures especially trolled or cast bibbed lures. They will also respond well to jigs and poppers.

One of the most productive ways to fish for cobia is by sight casting soft plastics and other lures on cobias sitting on manta rays or sharks. However, you may lose a few lures as they often hook the host and not the intended fish. Once hooked, cobia can have long and powerful runs. At some points, they may come in quickly before going on another powerful run. It is important to know that cobia is a very powerful fish. Therefore, be aware of their power when fishing for cobia.

2. When To Find Cobia

Find Cobia

Cobia can be found throughout the year in some places. However, they generally have a migratory nature. They usually migrate to find suitable waters for living and spawning. They often move North during spring and back south during fall as the cool weather sets in. You can find great catch when you fish for cobia in the beaches and near buoys, bridges, and markers during fall and spring.

3. Where To Catch Cobia

Where to Catch Cobia

Cobias are migratory fish, therefore, where you find them will vary depending on the season. However, you are likely to spot them along beaches, inshore structures, reefs, and sea grass beds wherever you find them. During winter, you are likely to find cobia inshore near or around markers, buoys, and bridges.

4. Tackle For Cobia

Tackle for Cobia

Consider using heavy tackle when fishing for cobia. This fish are powerful and can make strong runs pulling your line into structures or simply breaking weak lines.

5. Spinning Tackle For Cobia

Spinning Tackle for Cobia

When fishing for cobia along sea grass flats, it is advisable to use spinning tackles because of their user-friendly nature and advanced drag systems. Spinning tackles are suitable for casting heavy jigs and plastic eels because they are easy to use and manipulate and look quite realistic. The lures are also heavy and allow anglers to cast their lines farther as spinning lures do not often cast as far as conventional lures.

6. Conventional Tackle For Cobia

Conventional Tackle for Cobia

Although it may take a while to learn how to use conventional tackle, you are likely not to go back to using a spinning lure once you have got it . It is advisable to use a conventional tackle when fishing for cobia on reefs or other structures that the cobia may pull you into.

Never underestimate the power and strength of a cobia. Conventional tackles provide more leverage because they allow you to turn the fish as it tries to run from structures. In addition, conventional tackles allow you to cast farther and more accurately.

7. Fly Rods for Cobia

Fly rods for Cobia

The size of the fly rod you choose for cobia fishing is determined by your experience. Consider using the largest rod available because this will allow you to use a heavier line, which will allow you to cast farther. You will need a heavier line to increase the chances of landing a fish.

8. Baits for Cobia

Crabs consist the primary diet for cobia. However, they also eat eels, shrimp, and other small fish. All these prey make excellent baits for cobia. The fish seems to prefer young blue crabs. You can also use eels , pinfish, and mullets as live baits for cobia. In any case, the bait that you catch in a given area is what the cobia essentially feed on.

Baits for Cobia

Consider fishing with live baits; whether live or dead. The best baits in order include crabs, pinfish, mullet, threadfin, and ladyfish. If you prefer to use cut baits, mix them up with quartered pieces of crabs to make the baits more attractive to the cobia. The diet of this fish is predominantly composed of crabs.

9. Lures For Cobia

Cobias are aggressive creatures and can be fished using a wide range of lures. The fish will easily strike artificial lures. One of the best lures for cobia is a plastic swimming eel, which can be used in a wide range of fishing situations and conditions including along beaches, inshore structures, and on reefs. You may also use large, colorful lures such as jigs, plastic crabs, shrimp, and fish.

Lures for Cobia

I find rigged plastic eels to be the best plastic lure for cobia. These lures range in size from small lures that look like worms to large plastic eels measuring eight to ten inches. Cobias are likely to strike such baits if you put it in front of them. Avoid hitting the fish with the lure. Instead, cast it in such a way that it swims past the fish.

If you still wonder when choosing lures, here I have the post talk about the best lures used by the expert.

How To Fish For Cobia

Cobias are often found near structures where small fish, shrimps, squid, and crabs are likely to gather. Some of the best places to fish for cobia include around buoys, reefs, wrecks, sea grass, and floating debris.

How to Fish For Cobia buoys

Sight fishing is one of the most popular cobia fishing techniques, especially when you are using a light tackle or when fly-fishing. If you prefer to sight fish, cast the bait a few feet away from the fish and let it move in front of the fish’s path. On retrieval, be sure to use lots of action to attract them towards the bait or lure.

How to Fish For Cobia lure bait

Consider using cobia lures or baits that make noise. However, plastic baits can also be quite effective. The most important factor is to set the hook in such a way that the bait runs true in the water.

Cobias are also known to follow sharks and manta rays in the hope of scavenging food that these predators catch. You are likely to find cobia around eagle rays and sharks during cobia season.

Manta rays

Although you can successfully fish for cobia at various depths, I have caught cobia right beneath the boat I was fishing from. However, this presents its own unique set of challenges because catching cobia at such close range can be physically challenging because of their immense power and strength.

Cobia fishing is a lot different from conventional fishing. Cobia does not chase down food like other types of fish. Therefore, fishing for cobia requires a more laid-back approach. They often hide out in structures and wait for their favorite fish to come to them. It is much easier to fish for cobia when the waters are clear or when the tide is changing. Cobias often swim facing the outgoing tide waiting for fish to come towards them!

I hope you found this article useful. I wish you best of luck on your next cobia fishing expedition and hope these tips will help you make a great catch.

What Do Stingrays Eat? I Will Tell You A Secret!

What are some of the Common Foods for Stingrays? Stingrays are usually found in temperate waters in shallow coastal areas. They spend most of their time staying inactive, partially buried in sand. However, sways of the tide may cause them to move slightly in their sand burrows.

Stingrays have a camouflaging coloration that helps to protect them from predators including sharks and larger rays. Their bodies are flattened and feature pectoral fins attached to their heads and trunk with their distinct tails trailing behind their bodies. Despite being such a popular creature, many people do not know what do stingrays eat.

What Are Stingrays?

what do stingrays eat

The eyes of stingrays peer out from their dorsal sides. However, the fish’s nostrils, gill slits, and mouth are located on its underbelly. Many scientists believe that the eyes of the stingray do not play a significant role in hunting. Stingrays belong to the shark family and both stingrays and sharks have electrical sensors on their bodies known as ampullae of Lorenzini.

The electrical sensors of stingrays are located around the mouth of the fish and are used to sense electrical charges that potential preys emit. Many stingray species have jaw teeth that allow them to chew or crush clams, mussels, clams, and other mollusks.

what do stingrays eat

Although many stingrays remain inactive for considerable periods, they often swim to new territories to hunt. The fish moves by undulating its body like a wave while other stingray fishes move by flapping their wings like birds. They often use their tails to maneuver in water, but the primary purpose of the tail is protection.

what do stingrays eat

Stingrays are carnivorous, which means that they eat other animals and not plants. Their diet mainly consists of shrimp, squid, worms, and other small creatures that live on the ocean floors. They may also eat smaller fish, oysters, sea snails, and clams. Their strong jaw teeth allow them to crush through shells and eat their tasty treats. Stingray mouths are located on the underside of their bodies allowing them to scan the ocean floor and vacuum in smaller fish that come their way.

what do stingrays eat

Stingray diet consists of a wide range of foods. It is important for them to have a diet that includes diverse foods, especially if they are captive to eliminate the risk of experiencing health problems associated with poor nutrition. Being active animals, stingrays need at least one meal a day.

what do stingrays eat?

1. Tubifex and Black Worms

The initial foods for the rays that I just acquired are often tubifex and black worms. Many stingrays readily accept these foods. In addition, the worms are small enough increasing the probability of being eaten by the rays. Therefore, worms give rays the chance to inadvertently taste the unfamiliar foods.

However, there are many species of stingrays, each with its food preference. For example, teacup rays prefer to eat small fish, ghost shrimp, brine shrimp, and insect larvae. It is important not to feed stingrays solely on shrimps because shrimps provide less nutritional value when used as the sole feed for stingrays.

Tubifex and Black Worms

One of the techniques I use to ensure that my rays are feeding is by watching the movement of the spiracles when the fish move over food. The spiracles will open and close rapidly when the ray is eating and as it passes water from the mouth and out of the spiracles.

Once you notice that the ray is eating, add black and red worms into its aquarium. Stingrays will easily eat such foods once they recognize them as food. You may experiment with other ray foods later on.

2. Live Foods

Live Foods

You may introduce live food including blackworms and tubifex worms into the stingray chamber. However, ii is important to introduce live foods gradually and in small quantities to allow the rays to browse later. Gradual introduction of live food helps to prevent excessive production of nitrogenous waste in the aquarium.

3. Non-live, Non-aquatic Foods

Be sure to feed your stingrays on small quantities of chopped earthworms, red worms, and night crawlers to prevent colonization of the aquarium with dead animal remains. Remember, many stingray species have small mouths. Therefore, make sure that the non-live and non-aquatic food that you introduce to their aquariums is small enough to be eaten without much trouble.

The food particles you introduce to an aquarium chamber are too large if a ray tries to eat the food and spits it out before trying to eat it again. Some ray species including antenna rays have very small mouths despite their larger bodies.

close earthworms

Once they get used to their new environments and diets, rays often have an easier time eating larger pieces of food. Newly introduced rays may have a difficult time eating even smaller prey.

However, with time, they often learn to suck in their prey without chewing. Rays that have just been acquired may also have a difficult time chasing and consuming feeders. With time, they often learn to look for prey in the tank and eat them.

4. Commercially Stingray Feeds

brine shrimp

Stingrays can be trained to eat new foods such as pellet foods, brine shrimp, and other commercial foods. Although these foods do not cause harm to rays, it is important to keep them on a diet that consists mostly of fresh and live foods.

Newly acquired stingrays may not easily accept frozen or processed food. However, they often learn to eat such foods once they become acclimated. One of the most significant benefits of frozen or processed foods is that they are less likely to introduce ailments and parasites.

5. Hand-fed Stingrays

Hand-feeding Stingrays

Often, well-acclimated stingrays may be unable to gain weight, even when food if offered in plenty. Several factors may cause this problem including infections and competition with other fish for food. Occasionally, I find a stingray that is on the wrong side of the tank during feeding time or one that just does not know how to find food in the tank.

In such cases, I often hand feed the stingray. However, this does not mean that you literally have to feed the stingray with your hand. As the name suggests, stingrays can actually sting and it is impossible to accurately determine their behavior. Therefore, consider using feeding instruments such as forceps to feed your stingrays.

Provide plenty of food to your rays to ensure that they are well fed. Unlike other fish species that swim quietly once full, stingrays constantly look for food between feedings. This means that they have high metabolic rates and will expend significant amounts of energy searching for food. If they keep searching for food but do not find any, they will lose weight. Therefore, make sure you provide them with enough food.

Please let us know what you feed your stingrays on and share your experiences feeding your stingray in the comments section. Hope you found this article useful.

How to Keep Crawfish Alive? What is The Best Way?

Crawfish are delicious crustaceans that closely resemble lobsters. Many people consider crawfish to be as delicious as lobsters, which is why these crustaceans are harvested all over the world. In the U.S., crawfish are closely associated with the haute cuisine and culture of Louisiana. In fact, crawfish are the official crustacean of the state. I normally prefer to harvest or purchase crawfish on the day I intend to cook them.

However, many people prefer to purchase and eat them later but do not know how to keep crawfish alive in a sack or container for several days before finally preparing and eating them. Fortunately, I will provide you with some tips on how I keep my crawfish fresh and healthy for several days or even months with minimal effort.

What is the Best Way to Keep Crawfish Alive?Things You’ll NeedHousingWater QualityTemperatureFeedingDiseaseRelease

Things You’ll Need

  • Fish container, bucket, or aquarium
  • Gravel
  • Tree branch
  • PVC pipes

Crawfish are some of the least demanding crustaceans to keep. All they need are simple living conditions with filters and air pumps. However, even the filters and air pumps are non-essential and they can live without them., I normally keep them in water tanks equipped with filters and air pumps for their ultimate safety and health.

Nevertheless, the bare minimum for keeping a crawfish is a water container that is deep enough to cover the crawfish altogether and a tree branch or something that it can use to climb out of the water, without being able to escape. It is important to know that having a rock or branch for the crawfish to climb out of the water is essential in case the water is not filtered or aerated.

how to keep crawfish alive

Crawfish require lots of oxygen. Therefore, they will have to obtain the oxygen from the air if they are kept in still conditions such as a tank. If the crawfish in your tank cannot easily climb out of the water, they will ultimately drown. These crustaceans do not need to be kept in an aquarium setting, although I normally keep mine in such a setting because it provides the best viewing and most ideal conditions for their survival.

how to keep crawfish alive

A 5-gallon bucket or plastic shoebox can make a simple housing container for crawfish. However, make sure that the height from the water to the rim of the container is longer than the average crawfish. These crustaceans are incredible escape artists. Consider using a vented lid if the container is not tall enough.

how to keep crawfish alive

Crawfish also burrow. When kept in a container, they will feel relatively secure if they can have areas in which they can hide. Consider adding a few PVC tubes inside the container for them to reside in. add gravel (of course, before placing the crawfish) if the container is large enough. Having numerous hiding places is important, especially if you want to keep a good number of crawfish in one container.

Although some crawfish species may be tolerant of one another, some can be territorial and aggressive. Even the ones that are not territorial may consume tank mates, especially during molting when crawfish are normally weak, soft, and vulnerable. Therefore, it is important to provide plenty of spaces for crawfish to hide during these perilous times.

Water Quality

In case you decide not to use filtration in your water tank, you will have to completely change the water on a regular basis, preferably once a week. You will also have to replace the gravel inside the tank to get rid of excess detritus. However, you can leave rocks and tree branches placed inside the tank because they have beneficial bacteria that will help keep the water clean.

how to keep crawfish alive

Avoid using under gravel filters in the container because the crustaceans will move the gravel and expose the filter plate, which might significantly reduce the efficiency of the filter. Consider using internal and external canister filters or hang-on-the-back filters to provide biological filtration. Alternatively, use air powered sponge filters, although you should know that some crawfish species like to chew on them. This may not harm the crawfish, but you will have to replace the sponge material of the filter regularly.

how to keep crawfish alive

how to keep crawfish alive

Crawfish live in both temperate and tropical regions. The ideal water temperature for keeping crawfish is determined by the species you are keeping. Most North American species do not require a heater in their tanks. On the other hand, species from Southern United States can tolerate high temperatures.

It is important to know where your crawfish come from so that you can keep them in the ideal temperature settings. However, most crawfish species do well when kept at room temperature. For North American species, you may err towards keeping them cool instead of keeping them too warm. You should also know that some states might require you to obtain a license before keeping crawfish in an aquarium setting, especially at home.

Crawfish are omnivorous and feed primarily on plants, algae, and organic detritus. Crawfish do not often hunt and find it difficult to find animal proteins such as dead fish. However, they like animal proteins and would aggressively defend such meals from other crawfish or scavengers.

This is an important consideration to make, especially if you decide to keep your crawfish with other fish in an aquarium. It is uncommon for crawfish to attack live fish and eat it. However, the odds of that happening is determined by how well you feed the crawfish, the size of the aquarium, number of fish in the aquarium, and the type of crawfish species you have in the aquarium.

how to keep crawfish alive

Although crawfish are unlikely to attack other fish in an aquarium, the possibility of an attack increases if the fish inside the aquarium are slow moving or small. Most times, crawfish would eat fish that is already dead or dying.

Crawfish can survive on small amounts of food every other day. Remove excess food from the container. Examples of crawfish food include Romaine lettuce, algae or shrimp pellets, bloodworms, clam, krill, and squid. However, I usually feed my crawfish mostly on plant and algae based foods to lower the chances of predation.

crawfish food

If your crawfish remain soft for more than a day after molting, that could indicate that the crawfish is not receiving enough calcium or that the pH of the water inside the tank is low. I usually solve this problem by transferring the crawfish with the soft bodies to water with high pH.

However, I normally advise people to avoid the problem altogether by feeding them a diet rich in calcium. Some crawfish may die during the molting process. This problem could be caused by iodine deficiency. Consider adding iodine to the water inside the tank on a weekly basis to prevent problems associated with the molting process.

Avoid putting crawfish from different continents in the same tank to lower the risk of spreading diseases. One of the most serious diseases that can spread in this manner is the Crawfish Plague, more prevalent among North American species. However, the North American species are simply carriers of the disease.

This disease is caused by a fungus that is lethal to other types of crawfish including Australian and Eurasian. Therefore, avoid putting crawfish from different continents or regions in the same container. On the same breath, avoid sharing equipment such as nuts and buckets when working with different types of crawfish.

Crawfish can also be affected by the White Spot Disease. Although this disease mostly affects shrimps, it can spread to crawfish if they are fed raw food made from infected shrimp. Therefore, make sure that all foods containing shrimp have been thoroughly cooked before feeding the crawfish. There are times when I keep various types of crawfish in a single aquarium. However, I usually quarantine new ones for about a month before introducing them into the main aquarium.

Avoid releasing crawfish kept in captivity into the wild because they will likely not survive. If you decide to keep the crawfish in outdoor ponds or fish houses, make sure there is no possibility of them escaping into the wild. Crawfish can interfere with an entire ecosystem, especially if they are introduced into an area in which they are not native.

This is one of the reasons why some states impose restrictions on the transportation of crawfish. Even if you keep crawfish that are native to your area, avoid releasing them into the wild to lower the risk of spreading diseases.

release crawfish

Crawfish can be kept in containers, aquariums, and outdoor ponds for days with very few of them dying. However, it is important that you consider various factors if you intend to keep crawfish alive for a considerable period in a container or pond. Crawfish require food and oxygen to survive in a container. You also need to protect them from diseases by keeping crawfish from different regions and continents in separate containers. I hope you found this guide useful. I have not really exhausted all the tips.

Please share your tips and advices in the comments sections. Best of luck keeping your crawfish alive.
